New Programs

The Osteoporosis Medical Center, now "Desert Medical Advances," offers the community new programs in preventive health care. These programs are free and reviewed by the FDA.

1.   New Antibiotic for Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Bronchitis! Sinusitis.  A new antibiotic with increased effectiveness against penicillin resistant infections.

2.  New Anti-inflammatory Asthma Therapy

• New class of oral non-steroid anti-inflammatory medication (phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitors- PDE4).

• Non-CFC powered metered dose steroid inhaler to replace old inhalers being phased out by FDA mandate over the next few years.

3.  New Treatment for Chronic Lung Disease COPD.
This program offers a new combination of a long acting bronchodilator administered simultaneously with an inhaled steroid in a new type of delivery system for patients with COPD.

4.  Better Treatment for Arthiitis : Cox-2
“Super-Aspirin” is a new medication called a COX -2 inhibitor. It controls arthritis pain, but it is perfectly safe for the stomach, the kidney, and the liver. There will be no bruising on the skin either. Patients will be asked to rate how well the medication controls their pain and how much better they can function. Any patient with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis may apply.

5.  New Gene Therapies for Rheumatoid Arthritis
New therapy with Tissue Necrosis Factor- receptor protein (like Enbrel) is available to patients with rheumatoid arthritis. These are natural proteins of the body that suppress inflammation and no serious side effects occur for the stomach, liver, or kidney. The program will assess how well the new gene therapies control rheumatoid arthritis.
